Advancing the meaning of community care
In 2017, a study commissioned by the “Friendship 7 - Alachua County, Alachua county Public schools, The City of Gainesville, Gainesville Area Chambers of Commerce, Sante Fe College, UF Health and the University of Florida ,” pegged Gainesville, Florida as among the worst cities in the nations for disparities.
Despite being the largest District in the progressing City of Gainesville, East Gainesville has experienced a decrease in economic development since the 1960s. There is a concerning lack of resources provided to residents of East Gainesville in comparison to the remainder communities of the city that is recognized nationally.
Swarthy East GNV is committed to advancing the initiative to redesign community-based systems by increasing access to healthy foods, supporting small business owners, and educating at-risk residents about earning sustainable income for their families.
Since 2020, we have offered residents access to quality resources and information, curated partnerships with Local Farmers and Black owned businesses, and effectively engaged East Alachua County through cultural events.
A modern approach…
It is essential to us that our customers experience the essence of our culture that is uniquely manifested as a body, mind, spirit, and soul. We will supply the community with healthy food choices and essential products, while also offering a modern approach to ancient practice such as, chiropractor, acupuncture, yoga therapy, and many other holistic studies. Rather than do things the typical way, we’ve created a system designed around the needs of the community that we we humblely serve.
Our farm located in Alachua County is recognized by UF IFAS Extension as a County Grower. The land will serve seasonal crops that will be cultivate per choice of the community and raised by hired community members. We will also have a medicinal garden that feature native plants, herbs and vegetables. We will also like to offer a wellness space that supports healing through the blending of techniques from ancient cultures.

Where we are headed…
Our intention is to positively stimulate the local economy by supporting Black/Indigenous owned essential products, offering locally sourced fresh farm produce, and collaborating with non-profit entities within the community to support sustainability and development. We plan to root Swarthy East GNV as a positive community resource for future generations to identify with their past and be inspired for the future.
Mission
Our purpose…
Land was purchased in August 2022 to be cultivated in to a farm and the development has begun. Swarthy East GNV farm’s will offer a degree of regeneration by supporting native plants and existing water sources on the land through the art and study of agroecological. We plan to coexist with the land to serve the community. We will offer sustainable resources to improve the quality of life through Afro-egological practices. We will also provide our resources by culturally engaging our community, enhancing the local environments, and adding assets to the local economy, selling 100% locally items from existing farms and Black businesses across the state of Florida.
Although we are still in search of land for our store, we are determined to serve our community products that improve the quality of life.
Community Engagement
Our exchange…
Community engagement is the exchange of inviting community members into the decision-making strategy to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate solutions to adversities that affect their daily lives and environments. This process involves a degree of trust, communication, collaboration, and community participation to effectively focus on the needs, expectations and desires of community members.
Since 2020, we have acquaint exchanges with Alachua County, the City of Gainesville, and other local community entities throughout the State of Florida. We have utilized community events, collaborations/meetings, and partnerships as a vehicle of service to the our communities.
Swarthy East GNV is dedicated to ensuring efficient implementation of the better allocation of services being offered to the community members within the marginalized communities of Gainesville.
